White Canvas

1st Semester BA project, 2024

“White Canvas” is my final BA collection, reflecting my personal identity, heritage, and artistic journey. Most textiles used are recycled from past projects. The collection explores themes of love, childhood, and “saudade”, drawing inspiration from my hometown in Portugal, Póvoa de Varzim. The work is influenced by “As Penélopes”, a poetry book comparing the mythological figure Penelope to the traditional women of Póvoa. These women waited faithfully for their fishermen husbands and sons to return from the sea. Meanwhile, they were the “men” of the house. This matriarchal legacy and emotional strength are central to the project. The 4-piece capsule blends personal memories and cultural references through textile manipulation, embroidery, and vintage materials. Key pieces include: “Amo-te Muito” pants with embroidered shorthand “Amt Mt” (Portuguese modern short for “I love you so much”). The pants incorporate a patchwork of different types of lace from my grandmother’s vintage linens and antique markets and fairs.  “Bouquet” jacket with floral sleeve details symbolizing bouquets from my childhood ballet recitals. “White Swan” corset, inspired by Swan Lake and Póvoa’s traditional fishermen sweaters, using white wool, white fishing net, white lace and feathers. A matching tulle skirt, continuing the corset’s theme with fabric manipulation. The collection blends tradition with modern expressions of love, storytelling through garments that celebrate identity, memory, and place.
